Campaign Finance

with one comment

Also regarding campaign finance – it seems the fairest way to determine how candidates spend their money and from whom they can receive it is to simply do away with the idea of “donations” altogether. No one should be allowed to donate to a candidate’s campaign. Not individuals, and certainly not corporations.

Instead, candidates should get access to a set public fund every election. Access can be awarded via signatures or some other device. Every candidate starts the same amount of money and they can’t get any more. (Transparent expenditure sheets should easily accommodate this.)¬† Then, its a level playing field, the one with the most money doesn’t always win, and most importantly, candidates don’t feel tempted to cut deals with outside entities. May the best candidate win!
